The turn of the Millenium encounters a University and Fraternity system in flux. Amidst the chaos, the eternal ideals of brotherhood obtain, and reign; the flame of fraternity may flicker, but will not fail!

In 2007, due to low membership and attendant financial shortcomings, the Chapter lost its charter. After years of struggling to manage the finances of our 572 George chapter house, the officers of the Nu Beta Alumni Association decided to sell the property. In January 2008, an effort was undertaken to re-establish the Chapter, purchasing a new house, and getting the process in motion for re-colonizing. This took the form, in part, of an April 18th Alumni Association Annual Meeting, at Waller Hall in New Brunswick. Bryan Luoma (732 688 8917) spearheaded the effort. You can email him at b.e.luoma@gmail.com.

sent out at that time.

On October 29, 2009, at a meeting of the Board of Trustees a very respectable turnout of the House Corporation and Alumni Association met for dinner and to establish an action plan. The International has been active in recolonizing, and this impetus dovetails nicely with the renewed emphasis that was so ably documented by the large turnout. See photos of the dinner's attendees here.

This was the agenda:
  1. Address a proposed investment policy statement for Association funds
  2. Address the status of a donation by the Association to the Educational Foundation
  3. Elect officers and trustees
  4. Re-colonization and National's requirements from the local graduate chapter, including:
    • discuss a Pig Dinner, select Pig Dinner date, and elect Pig Dinner chair
    • discuss interest and/or potential candidate graduate brothers for serving as advisors to Colony (including Purple Legionnaire and Board of Colony Advisors)
    • preparation of graduate newsletter
    • funding and sources of funding of Colony (first semester costs are $10,000 for colonization and $2,000 for scholarships; National is requesting $2,000 in scholarships for going forward semesters)

Sept 17 2006 saw a magnanimous (and tasty!) contribution by the House to the annual "Heel to Heal" walk/cycling event at Johnson Park in Piscataway, organized by the Embrace Kids Foundation. The event had over 800 participants, including the families of children with cancer and blood disorders, for whom the foundation exists. Junior Kai Addo was the prime (rib) mover, barbequing food for the participants afterwards. (It wasn't really prime rib---just couldn't resist the pun opportunity). "It's for a good cause," Brother Addo offered in an interview with the Daily Targum. This participation, along with that of other Rutgers students, was one reason why the event coordinator said "We love the Rutgers community."

In 2005 Nu Beta provided live entertainment, food and alcohol-free drinks to raise money for the Red Cross and Salvation Army in support of "Katrina's Kids".

Fiji Day 2004
This is a brief article about the successful 2004 event:

"Fiji Day, foreseen as a possible replacement for Pig Dinner, has been an "Open House" for everyone to visit the House – undergraduate and graduate brothers' family and friends, as well as the Rutgers community. We had a heartening turnout of graduate brothers from the 70's at the event, in addition to the undergraduate cohort. Maybe from that core, and the closeness engendered at the event, will come a feeling of community inspired by shared memory, and facilitated through this website.

"Predominant in the event were the themes of academics and community service.  The 2nd Annual Josh Shane Basketball Shootout took place in the warm afternoon. The Basketball Shootout is an annual fundraising event to benefit the chapter's designated charity, The Institute for Children with Cancer and Blood Disorders based at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

"The Chapter's heart was illustrated by its adoption, as their "little brother", of "little Lorenzo", a local 5 year old boy with cancer. This new generation of Fijis is characterized by such social consciousness, and they do us all proud in that regard.

An Academic and Community Service Recognition Dinner was our shared repast. The driveway was the location of a buffet style dinner to recognize the academic and community service achievements of individual brothers and the whole Chapter. The informal nature of this approach enhanced interaction between the generations. During this time, the Nu Beta Foundation presented scholarship awards to deserving undergraduate brothers, and a number of Brothers spoke."

Outstanding examples of academic work for a recent crop of young strivers, in a  Chapter which has been characterized by academic excellence for most of its history.  This scholarly bent was presaged by the early years of the Chapter, with many Phi Beta Kappas and Henry Rutgers Scholars. ( Learn more )
