Our Story

Some ten years after the momentous societal and personal changes unleashed by the Stonewall Rebellion began to reverberate nationwide, the Center for Identity Development opened in Montclair New Jersey to service an important need. Almost three decades later, the Center continues to be a well-respected and popular venue, offering innovative, comprehensive, and confidential mental health services.

The Center was one of the first nationwide to provide counseling designed specifically to help people cope with personal "problems of living", with special emphasis on concerns related to sexual identity, although all are welcome.

Acknowledging the fact that each individual has the right --- and the responsibility --- to direct his or her own life, the Center stresses areas of self-awareness, understanding ones and others feelings, gaining insight, and making decisions that will lead to a more productive and happy lifestyle.

The purposes of the Center are to offer therapeutic services to those who are experiencing problems in integrating their sexuality, and to provide general therapeutic services to gay and bisexual people in a non-judgemental milieu.

Integrating One's Sexuality

The task of achieving a true sense of one's sexuality is an on-going process. At various points in one's life, however, difficulties in this area can arise. The Center provides an opportunity for individuals to discuss and to work through these difficulties, so that the task becomes less burdensome, less lonely.

Services to Gays and Bisexuals

Even in today's society, seeking therapy when needed often poses a problem for gays and bisexuals. The Center's therapeutic services are offered with an understanding and acceptance of the individual and his/her lifestyle. Each client can be assured of receiving quality care without prejudice or recrimination on the part of the staff.

The Staff

The Center's professional staff represents a wide range of disciplines and clinical expertise. The staff includes a licensed clinical psychologist, certified clinical social workers, a certified alcoholism counselor and a psychiatrist. They are available Monday through Saturday, both day and evening hours, by appointment only. Call to schedule an appointment or obtain other information.

Fees

In order to continue to maintain quality, accessible care, our fees are moderate, and a sliding scale is available. Medicaid and other third party payers may be accepted.

Confidentiality

The Center strictly adheres to a policy of confidentiality regarding all contacts and no individual need fear a breach of trust in this connection. Let our long-standing presence and sterling reputation reassure and comfort you in this regard.

Eligibility

Center services are offered to all, regardless of race, color, creed, sex, national origin, handicap or age, except to the extent permitted by law.
